An all-time favourite for Halloween, Gil Kenan’s 2006 hit Monster House is one of those films that fits into the “meant for kids but genuinely scary” category alongside Henry Selick’s Corpse Bride, and of course, Coraline. Animated using live action motion capture animation (“seventy dots glued on your face” according to the actors in behind the scenes featurettes), the film follows three preteens as they attempt to destroy the sentient, child-eating house across the street on the night of Halloween. With an absolutely stellar cast – Steve Buscemi, John Heder and Maggie Gyllenhaal amongst others – snappy dialogue and just the right amount of scare factor, Monster House is a nostalgic horror classic that gets better with each watch.
